Cardiologists

Cardiology

The role of the Cardiologist is to investigate symptoms, make a diagnosis and treat, in a non-surgical way, any condition related to the heart.

Symptoms that are dealt with include chest pain, shortness of breath, palpitations, tiredness related to exertion, dizziness, blackouts and ankle swelling.

The risk of developing heart disease is evaluated, and preventive measures advised, and healthy living encouraged.

The common conditions investigated and treated include:

  • heart attacks
  • coronary artery disease (blockage of the arteries supplying heart muscle)
  • heart failure
  • high cholesterol
  • high blood pressure
  • valve abnormalities
  • abnormal heart rhythms
  • pericardial disease
  • heart disease caused by cancer therapy (chemotherapy and radiation).

Cardio-oncology

A Cardio-oncologist assesses the cancer patient for cardiovascular problems before, during and after cancer treatment (chemotherapy and radiation). Cardiovascular problems may be caused by chemotherapy and radiation, or they may be inherent, making the outcome of cancer treatment worse if the cardiovascular problems are not detected and managed before commencing treatment.

Umhlanga Diabetic and Cardio-metabolic Centre

This centre provides holistic care of the diabetic, cardiac and endocrine patient. The cardiologists work in conjunction with the diabetologists/endocrinologists.
